MISSION
STATEMENT
adopted
by
The New Hanover County Board
of Commissioners
January
1993
In
partnership with our citizens, the government of
New Hanover County is dedicated to promoting orderly growth,
while preserving the outstanding quality of life which has
made our County a desirable place to live and work.
The
government of New Hanover County accepts
the challenge of providing the services necessary to ensure
a clean, safe, stable environment, and to promote the physical
and economic well-being of all its citizens.
The City is governed
by a non-partisan City Council consisting of a mayor, mayor pro
tem, and five council members. Elections are held every two years.
The Mayor serves two-year terms and the council members serve staggered
four- year terms. Click here to see the Wilmington Code of Ordinances.
The City Council
holds regular meetings on the first and third Tuesday of the month
at 6:30 PM in the City Council chambers in City Hall. Agendas are
available on the Friday before Council meetings and results of the
meeting are published in an Action Agenda. Meetings are broadcast
live on Time Warner Channel 8, the City's Government Information
Channel. Schedule of replays is also posted on Channel 8.
A variety of
Boards and Commissions assist in policy-making decisions. Citizens
that are appointed by the City Council volunteer their time to serve.
The Council
also appoints a City Attorney who gives legal advice to the City,
a City Clerk whose job it is to maintain official records for the
City, and a City Manager who carries out the policy decisions of
the Council through the Citys staff of approximately 1000
employees.
